Luxlight Australian Shepherds
Hi! My name is Julia Khoury, and I've loved dogs my whole life.
I was never allowed one as a kid, as much as I begged, so as soon as I was moved out and able, I got my first dog, my old man Spiro, in the summer of 2013. He's a Husky, German Shepherd, Lab and a whole bunch of other breeds, but most of all he's my big old boy and best Po-man!
Thanks to him, I was sucked into the world of dogsports while I was going to university at MUN in Newfoundland. I've been competing and training now for going on 10 years!
It was never Spiro's favorite thing though, so once we moved back to New Brunswick and had a bigger space, I got my first Aussie, Lux, from Kaitlin at Malka Australian Shepherds in Nova Scotia! She was my best friend and we bonded in a way Spiro and I never had. She was an amazing girl, and sadly was taken from me far too soon in a very tragic and unfair way in the winter of 2024, when we were rear ended on our way to agility class.
If Lux taught me anything, it was to appreciate and enjoy every moment. She was just full of joy and always happy, and brought that light everywhere she went. I named my kennel after her, and that beautiful light she brought into my life, because without her it wouldn't exist.
I got my first breeding prospect, Miso, in the fall of 2022. She's my first breeding dog, she was my first whelping experience, and she's a great mom! We added our first intact boy, Bluff, in the fall of 2024, and then we got Jupiter shortly after the accident - she healed our hearts a bit after losing Lux.
My program goals are to produce beautiful, athletic, happy dogs with the drive and confidence to be competitive in whatever their families want to do, whether that's agility, scent, rally, canicross, hiking, adventuring, traveling etc!
All of my personal breeding dogs receive the following health testing:
OFA Hips
OFA Elbows
CAER Eyes (Yearly)
OFA Patellas
OFA Advanced Cardiac via Echo
OFA Thyroid
Pennhip
Full DNA Panel
This is more than your average Aussie breeder does, but I believe knowledge is power and I want to know I did everything I could to produce the healthiest puppies! Plus these tests are actually recommended by ASHGI (Australian Shepherd Health and Genetics Institute)!
On top of this I'm very picky on the temperaments of my dogs. I won't breed/keep reactivity, aggression, neuroticy or fearfulness in my program. I want happy, confident, socialized dogs and I want their puppies set up with the best chance to be that way as well!
I also value transparency and honesty! I don't think there's anything to hide if you're doing things ethically and can back your choices.
For my litters, I will be doing extensive and thorough socialization with the puppies and will be documenting it along the way! I want them to be set up for success in their new homes so I do individual leash/collar desensitization, individual crate training, ens (puppy culture) and exposure to lots of different textures, sounds, smells. All of the things to set them up for success in life!
The puppies will see the veterinary ophthalmologist in Moncton before going home, as well as receive their regular deworming/vaccines at our regular vet.. I also will have puppy packs for their families to take home including things like blankets that smell like mom, personalized accessories, information on the breed/training and of course they come with lifelong support from me, their breeder, no matter what!
